James Metcalf, Co-founder of the Crosslane Group
James began his career in information technology at International Computers Limited (ICL) and then Tandem Computers. He managed and held shares in several businesses, taking the role of investor and non-executive director. Thereafter he joined the IT company Oracle Corporation, ultimately managing approximately 5% of worldwide turnover and successfully creating and implementing a new world wide rental licensing model. Following this, James held positions of chairman and CEO in publicly floated IT-based businesses before founding the Crosslane Group with business partner Michael Sharples in 2006. Since then, James has dedicated significant time to the UK and European student accommodation market, developing the Crosslane Group’s business in the UK and across Europe. This today includes an innovative residential development business which sits alongside student accommodation. The current pipeline exceeds £1Bn of assets to be built over the period to 2024.
Outside of work, James enjoys spending downtime watching a variety of sports and maintaining personal fitness through walking and gym exercise.
Michael Sharples, Co-founder of the Crosslane Group
Since 1991 Michael has been a successful entrepreneur, as founder, acquirer and seller of a number of diverse businesses in different market sectors. Prior to Crosslane, Michael co-founded the Hamsard Group plc which acquired three technology businesses between 2002 and 2003. The company operated in seven countries of which Michael was CEO, successfully took Hamsard onto the AIM market in 2005 at a pre-IPO valuation of £18m.
Michael left Hamsard in 2006 to form the Crosslane Group which he co-founded with business partner James Metcalf. Since co-founding the Crosslane Group, Michael has played a prominent role in the successful acquisition, development, operation and disposal of student accommodation across the UK and mainland.
Having spent many years playing first team cricket and football, today he enjoys cycling, walking and watching various sporting events.
Peter Stienlet, Property Director
Peter Stienlet, Property Director for Crosslane Property Group joined the company in 2020. Peter previously worked as the CEO of Patrick Parsons for 17 years, he has gained over 30 years engineering experience including civil, structural, geo-environmental, mechanical and electrical engineering.
Using his expertise and wealth of knowledge, Peter's primary objective is ensuring first class delivery of our development schemes from cradle to grave. Peter leads the acquisition, development, and project management teams alongside all third-party contracts.
At the weekend you'll find Peter exploring the beautiful North East countryside with his family and dogs.
Peter has many strings to his bow... but during the summer months Peter enjoys spending quality time in his boats sailing around Scotland and the Irish sea.
Joanne Pollard, Managing Director for Prime Student Living
Joanne Pollard has recently joined the Crosslane Property Group as Managing Director for Prime Student Living. With extensive experience within the PBSA and BTR sector, Joanne has brought a wealth of knowledge, skill and passion to the company. Joanne joins with a customer focused agenda which closely aligns with the vision of the Prime Student Living brand and team, delivering results through people.
Joanne’s career spanned HR and training across many sectors before moving into operational management working in Campus Living Villages, The Mansion Group and Five Nine Living.
Being voted one of Yorkshire’s top 100 influential business leaders we are thrilled to have Joanne as part of our team, as she drives success through building the business with our clients, customers, and stakeholders, including our University partners.
Joanne also stays busy horse riding, Pilates and being an accredited ITF Taekwondo instructor working towards her black belt.
Mark Hughes, Managing Director of Crosslane Residential Living Ltd
Mark initially joined the Crosslane Group in March 2014 as Head of Acquisitions for Crosslane Residential Developments and was responsible for the identification of assets for re-development in specific target locations which provided high yield returns.
Having trained as an Architect he worked in private practice as a project Architect on a diverse range of projects from private and public housing through to hospitals and mixed-use commercial schemes. He then went on to work for a number of house-hold names including Barratt Homes, BUPA Care Homes and CALA Homes. During this time, he was responsible for the acquisition of sites across the UK, managing the process from site identification, planning, and land purchase through to overseeing the construction and delivery of the schemes.
Mark took up the post of Managing Director of the new Crosslane Residential Living business in 2019 and has been instrumental in setting up the business, including product design and site acquisition. His primary focus is to deliver the business’s first residential living scheme whilst developing and growing the business through a strategically led approach to site identification and acquisition.
In his spare time, he supports his wife on house conversions and supports his local community doing voluntary work, in the role of special Constable.
David Smith, Finance Director
David is a qualified Chartered Accountant and an accomplished, strategic and commercially astute Director. He has a wealth of previous experience spanning over two decades, across diverse industry sectors, providing expertise to ensure delivery of sustainable and profitable growth, whilst adding shareholder value. This experience includes real estate and portfolio transactions, structuring and operational finance management within expanding and high growth businesses across international jurisdictions.
David joined Crosslane in December 2016 from McCafferty Asset Management where he was Finance Director for eight years, overseeing the management and transactions of 90 commercial real estate assets with a value of circa £775m and was integral to driving efficiencies within the business. As part of this role David also acted as an interim FD for a £30m Channel Islands listed real estate investment trust prior to a successful reverse takeover by a £600m property fund.
Outside of work David loves spending time up in the hills. When he is not walking in the Lakes or the Peak district, he has been known to challenge himself cycling from Lands’ end to John O’ groats. More recently he has completed his coastal skipper sailing course.
Tanya Kempster, Human Resources Director
Tanya joined Crosslane in September 2018 as their first HR Director. Having completed her degree in Psychology and Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, she has since gained over 20 years’ both generalist and specialist HR experience across FTSE 250 companies.
Prior to a period of consultancy, she led the Human Resource teams at N Brown Group Plc, one of the UK’s leading digital retailers, most recently as Head of Culture, Talent and Policy. Prior to this she was Group Head of Reward & Recognition as well as Head of Talent Management.
Her primary focus is to deliver a people strategy that is fundamental to Crosslane’s growth strategy, whilst driving a high performance culture and attracting, developing and retaining top talent.
Outside of work, Tanya likes to spend her time hiking in the mountains in Ireland and challenging herself and her dog with canicross distance running.
Charlie Pogson, Director of Marketing
Following his retail degree and diploma with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Charlie rapidly progressed within the supermarket sector, holding various marketing roles for Safeway, Somerfield and Kwik Save before moving to the health & beauty sector as well as fashion before a stint heading up marketing at general merchandise value retailer Poundstretcher. Having gained over 15 years’ experience in all elements of B2C marketing, Charlie decided to broaden his skill set and knowledge by moving to the B2B sector, becoming Marketing Director at Kwintet, Europe’s largest and the world’s second largest supplier of workwear. Over a 6 year period Charlie was responsible for a portfolio of brands, operating in a wide variety of market sectors, with different routes to market, across a number of countries, both within Europe, USA & UAE.
Charlie is not only a grounded and commercially focussed marketer, but has a much wider business understanding and strategic ability. This together with his proposition, brand & identity, business development and omni-channel approach puts him in good stead to support Crosslane achieve its future ambitions. And it is the entrepreneurial, ground breaking, market leading business initiatives being planned which encouraged Charlie to join Crosslane in September 2014 to be responsible for marketing activities for all its business activities, both in the UK and across the global markets in which it operates.
Outside of work, Charlie is a family man, spending his time with his wife, two daughters and dog in the wilds of the Yorkshire countryside, having a passion for the outdoors.
Tim Barbrook, Head of Debt Finance
Tim joined Crosslane in 2015 and has overall responsibility for financing across each of the Crosslane businesses. One of the early lenders within PBSA, Tim has spent his career in Real Estate Finance at Citibank, Lloyds Banking Group and, prior to joining Crosslane was Executive Director at Wimmer Financial.
Having completed his MBA, Crosslane continues to support Tim with his studies of which he is now working towards a further qualification, Chartered Financial Analyst certification. When he manages to find some downtown, he enjoys quality time with his young family.
Mark Stubbs, Director of Strategic Development
Mark has been involved in the Debt and Equity capital sector for over 35 years. He has held various Board level roles with the Mansion Group Braermar Group and Hornbuckle Mitchell, PLCs. Mark is responsible for the raising of many hundreds of millions of debt and equity and is currently Business Development Director for Crosslane, where he is responsible for equity raising to fund all of Crosslane’s development pipeline.
When Mark isn’t strutting his bass guitar with a local band, he’s out cycling or playing badminton. He is also keen on motorsport and is looking out for a new motorbike to relive his youth!
Pam Gill, Head of Legal
Pam is our newest member of the Crosslane Senior Leadership team, heading up our legal function. Pam has a wealth of experience both in house and private practice over her extensive career.
She has spent the last 4 years as General Counsel for a Property Development and Investment Company, in this role Pam set up the legal infra-structure for the business and worked closely with the board and external professionals to deliver more than £500M worth of property acquisition and disposals. Pam was also a key player in advising the investors on the acquisition of the UK arm of Bank of Cyprus.
Pam started her legal career at global law firm Eversheds as a trainee and remained at the firm for over 10 years. Pam has experience ranging from site assembly, development, lettings and real estate finance. During Pam’s time at Eversheds Pam advised HS2, Land Securities, Birmingham International Airport and Hammerson. Pam also specialised in real estate finance managing a national team of lawyers to deliver the property aspects for lenders and alternative lenders on finance transactions and club deals. Pam’s clients included Lloyds, HSBC, Barclays Bank and Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG.
Outside of work Pam is a busy lady. When’s she not playing cricket for her local ladies’ cricket team, she is supporting the under 8 & 10’s team. Pam has also dedicated her time during the pandemic, supporting the vulnerable in her area.
